Procedures and Etiquette for Bringing Home Your Pet’s Ashes
As someone who has been in the pet industry for over 15 years, I’ve seen firsthand how deep the bond between humans and their beloved pets can be. When I launched a new service offering Pet Aquamation (Bio-Cremation) in Jabodetabek, Indonesia, I knew one of the most common — and heartfelt — questions families ask is:
“Can I bring my pet’s ashes home?”
The short answer: Yes, you can.
But there are procedures and respectful practices you should understand first.
1. Pet Ashes Are More Than Just Remains — They’re Memories in Physical Form
For many pet parents, the ashes are not just remains. They represent the presence, memories, and love that still linger even after their furry companion is gone.
However, not all cremation types allow you to bring home ashes.
To do so, you must choose a private or individual cremation, such as Pet Aquamation, where the ashes you receive are truly your pet’s — not mixed with others.
2. Official Procedure to Bring Home Pet Ashes
At our facility, here’s what the process looks like:
a. Choose a Service That Includes Ash Return
Make sure you select an individual cremation service, not a communal or mass cremation. This guarantees your pet’s ashes are respectfully separated and preserved.
b. Wait 2–5 Business Days
We carefully complete the cremation process, cool and collect the ashes with full hygiene standards. This short waiting period also gives you space to process the loss.
c. Select Your Preferred Memorial Container
We offer several memorial options:
- Wooden or ceramic urns
- Personalized keepsake boxes
- Small vials for wearable jewelry or lockets
d. Receive with Official Cremation Certificate
When we return the ashes, you’ll receive an official certificate of cremation — a formal honor to your pet’s life.
3. Etiquette for Keeping Pet Ashes at Home
There are no strict laws in Indonesia against keeping pet ashes at home, but here are some respectful practices:
- Designate a special area in your home (e.g. a memorial shelf or altar)
- Avoid storing ashes in damp or neglected spaces
- Keep ashes separate for each pet, especially if you have multiple
This isn’t just etiquette — it’s a way to show lasting love and dignity.
4. Other Memorial Options Besides Keeping Ashes
Not everyone chooses to bring ashes home. Other meaningful alternatives include:
- Scattering the ashes in a pet memorial garden
- Planting a memorial tree using ashes as part of the soil
- Storing ashes in a columbarium (if available in your area)
These options allow you to honor your pet’s memory in ways that feel right for you.
Conclusion: Yes, You Can Bring the Ashes Home — But Treat Them with Love
Bringing home your pet’s ashes is more than an act of grief. It’s a tribute, a continuation of your bond.
By choosing the right service and following respectful care, your home becomes a place where their love still lives on.
